Isotretinoin, a retinoid, is available in capsules for oral administration. It is a yellow to orange crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 300.44. The chemical formula of isotretinoin is 13-cis-retinoic acid. Isotretinoin capsules contain various ingredients including butylated hydroxyanisole, edetate disodium, gelatin, glycerin, hydrogenated vegetable oil, soybean oil, yellow wax, red iron oxide paste, titanium dioxide, yellow iron oxide paste, and black imprinting ink. The capsules meet USP Dissolution Test 4.
Amnesteem is used to treat severe nodular Acne. It should only be used for patients with many nodules that have not responded to other treatments. Amnesteem should not be taken by pregnant women due to the risk of birth defects. A single course of treatment for 15 to 20 weeks can lead to long-lasting remission in many patients. If a second course is needed, it should not be started until at least 8 weeks after the first course. The optimal timing for retreatment has not been determined for patients who have not finished growing.
