DILANTIN (phenytoin) is a medication that is chemically related to barbiturates but has a different structure. The chemical name for DILANTIN is 5,5-diphenyl-2,4 imidazolidinedione. Each 30 mg DILANTIN capsule contains 30 mg of phenytoin sodium. Other ingredients include lactose monohydrate, confectioner's sugar, talc, and magnesium stearate. The capsule shell contains titanium dioxide, gelatin, D&C yellow No. 10, and FD&C red No. 3. The absorption of DILANTIN is slow, and peak blood concentrations are expected in 4 to 12 hours. Each 100 mg DILANTIN capsule contains 100 mg of phenytoin sodium. The capsule body contains titanium dioxide and gelatin, while the capsule cap contains FD&C red No. 28, FD&C yellow No. 6, and gelatin. Similar to the 30 mg capsule, the absorption of DILANTIN is slow, and peak blood concentrations are expected in 4 to 12 hours.
DILANTIN is used to treat tonic-clonic and psychomotor Seizures. It is also used to prevent and treat seizures after neurosurgery.
