Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic produced by Saccharopolyspora erythraea (formerly Streptomyces erythraeus). It is a basic compound that readily forms salts with acids. Erythromycin ethylsuccinate is an ester of erythromycin that can be taken orally. It is chemically known as erythromycin 2'-(ethylsuccinate) and has a molecular formula of C 43 H 75 NO 16 with a molecular weight of 862.06. Erythromycin Ethylsuccinate Granules are intended to be mixed with water. Each 5-mL teaspoonful of the cherry-flavored suspension contains erythromycin ethylsuccinate equivalent to 200 mg of erythromycin. The suspension is pleasant tasting and ready for oral administration. Erythromycin Ethylsuccinate 200 Liquid is a fruit-flavored suspension where each 5-mL teaspoonful contains erythromycin ethylsuccinate equivalent to 200 mg of erythromycin. Erythromycin Ethylsuccinate 400 Liquid is an orange-flavored suspension where each 5-mL teaspoonful contains erythromycin ethylsuccinate equivalent to 400 mg of erythromycin. Both granules and suspensions are primarily intended for pediatric use but can also be used in adults.
