Forteo (teriparatide injection) is a synthetic form of human parathyroid hormone. It contains the same active region as the natural hormone. Teriparatide is made using modified Escherichia coli bacteria. It is supplied as a sterile, colorless solution in a glass cartridge within a single-patient-use pen for subcutaneous injection. Each pen contains 2.7 mL of solution, with 2.4 mL delivered per dose. Each mL of solution contains 250 mcg of teriparatide, along with other ingredients. The pH is adjusted to 4 using hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide. Each pen delivers a dose of 20 mcg of teriparatide for up to 28 days.
FORTEO is used to treat postmenopausal women with Osteoporosis at high risk for fracture or those who have failed or cannot tolerate other osteoporosis treatments. It also helps increase bone mass in men with primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis at high risk for fracture or those who have failed or cannot tolerate other treatments. Additionally, FORTEO is used to treat men and women with osteoporosis due to sustained systemic glucocorticoid therapy at high risk for fracture or those who have failed or cannot tolerate other treatments.
