Lincomycin Injection, USP is a sterile solution used for intramuscular and intravenous use. It contains lincomycin hydrochloride, which is a lincosamide antibacterial produced by the growth of a member of the lincolnensis group of Streptomyces lincolnensis. The molecular formula of lincomycin hydrochloride is C 18 H 34 N 2 O 6 S·HCl·H 2 O and the molecular weight is 461.01. Lincomycin hydrochloride is a white or practically white, crystalline powder that is soluble in water. Lincomycin Injection, USP contains lincomycin hydrochloride in a sterile, clear, colorless solution with benzyl alcohol used as a preservative 9.45 mg/mL, and water for injection. It is supplied in 2 mL and 10 mL multiple-dose vials containing 300 mg/mL of lincomycin (equivalent to 340 mg/mL of lincomycin hydrochloride, USP).
Lincomycin Injection sterile solution is used to treat serious Infections caused by certain strains of streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci. It is mainly recommended for patients who are allergic to penicillin or for those who should not take penicillin. The physician should carefully consider the nature of the infection and available alternatives before prescribing lincomycin, due to the risk of a certain type of Diarrhea called CDAD. Lincomycin Injection may be used alongside other antimicrobial agents if necessary. It is not effective against minor bacterial infections or Viral Infections. To prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the efficacy of lincomycin injection, it should only be used to treat or prevent infections that have been confirmed or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When possible, healthcare providers should consider culture and susceptibility information to guide treatment decisions.
