Niacin extended-release tablet, USP is an antihyperlipidemic agent that contains niacin. It is available in three tablet strengths: 500 mg, 750 mg, and 1,000 mg niacin USP. The tablets are pink, film-coated, and unscored, and are taken orally. The inactive ingredients in the tablets include hypromellose, hydrogenated vegetable oil Type I, glyceryl behenate, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, polyvinyl alcohol-partially hydrolyzed, titanium dioxide, polyethylene glycol, talc, iron oxide red, and iron oxide yellow. The tablets meet USP Dissolution Test 3 for niacin.

Usage for Niacin

Therapy with lipid-altering agents should be part of a comprehensive approach for individuals at high risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hyperlipidemia. Niacin therapy is recommended when a restricted diet and nonpharmacologic measures alone are insufficient. Niacin extended-release tablets, USP can reduce elevated TC, LDL-C, Apo B, and TG levels, as well as increase HDL-C in patients with primary hyperlipidemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It is also indicated to reduce the risk of recurrent nonfatal myocardial infarction in patients with a history of myocardial infarction and hyperlipidemia. In patients with a history of coronary artery disease (CAD) and hyperlipidemia, niacin, in combination with a bile acid binding resin, can slow down or reverse the progression of atherosclerotic disease. Niacin extended-release, in combination with a bile acid binding resin, can also reduce elevated TC and LDL-C levels in adult patients with primary hyperlipidemia. Niacin is additionally recommended as adjunctive therapy for severe hypertriglyceridemia in adult patients at risk of pancreatitis and who have not responded adequately to dietary efforts. It is important to note that the addition of niacin extended-release did not show a reduction in cardiovascular morbidity or mortality in a clinical trial involving patients treated with simvastatin.
