Drug Information on Valium (Diazepam)

Valium (diazepam) is a benzodiazepine derivative with the chemical name of diazepam being 7-chloro-1,3-dihydro-1-methyl-5-phenyl-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one. It is a crystalline compound that is colorless to light yellow in appearance and cannot dissolve in water. Valium comes in tablet form with options of 2 mg, 5 mg, or 10 mg of diazepam. Other ingredients in each tablet include anhydrous lactose, corn starch, pregelatinized starch, and calcium stearate. The 5 mg tablets have FD&C Yellow No. 6 and D&C Yellow No. 10 dyes, while the 10 mg tablets contain FD&C Blue No. 1. The 2 mg tablets do not contain any dye.

Usage for Valium (Diazepam)

Valium is indicated for the management of Anxiety disorders or for short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. It may also be useful in the symptomatic relief of acute agitation, tremor, delirium tremens, hallucinosis, skeletal muscle spasm, spasticity, convulsive disorders, athetosis, and stiff-man syndrome. However, the effectiveness of long-term use of Valium has not been assessed by clinical studies, and the physician should periodically reassess its usefulness for each patient.
