The active component of this medication is albuterol sulfate, a selective beta 2 -adrenergic bronchodilator. Albuterol sulfate is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol. The inhaler is a blue plastic device with a blue cap and a pressurized metered-dose aerosol canister fitted with a counter. Each canister contains a microcrystalline suspension of albuterol sulfate in propellant HFA-134a. The inhaler delivers 120 mcg of albuterol sulfate per actuation from the valve and 108 mcg from the mouthpiece (equivalent to 90 mcg of albuterol base). It is recommended to prime the inhaler before first use, after a period of non-use or if it has been dropped. To prime, release 4 sprays into the air away from the face, shaking well before each spray. Avoid spraying in eyes.
VENTOLIN HFA is a beta 2-adrenergic agonist used for the treatment or prevention of bronchospasm in adult and pediatric patients aged 4 years and older with reversible obstructive airway disease. It is also indicated for the prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm in the same patient population.
